Configuration manager 2012 R2 supports OS in-place upgrade

Got you with the title? Thought so ;)

This is a pretty cool new statement from Microsoft. Configuration Manager 2012 R2 supports an in-place upgrade of the servers operating system. It is limited however and shows how well integrated the R2 release is to the standard Windows Server 2012 release.

Previously only service pack upgrades have been supported by Configuration Manager for the base OS, however between Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 it is now supported to upgrade whilst Configuration Manager 2012 R2 is installed.

This is great news since there are customers out there stuck at installing Windows Server 2012 since their virtualization platform hasn’t been upgraded to support Windows Server 2012 R2. Now they can install SCCM 2012 R2 now and do the upgrade when their virtualization platform supports Windows Server 2012 R2.
